Community Hospice Raises Awareness During Hospice Care Month

November is National Hospice Care Month, a time to reach out to our community and raise awareness about the compassionate care that hospice provides.

“There’s an inaccurate perception among the American public that hospice means you’ve given up,” said J. Donald Schumacher, president and CEO of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization. “Those of us who have worked in the field have seen firsthand how hospice and palliative care can improve the quality of life. And there’s a growing body of research showing that hospice and palliative care may prolong the lives of some people who receive care.”

No one likes to think about death and dying, but it’s something everyone has to face eventually.  Community Hospice is a locally governed non-profit resource in our community that provides comfort, dignity and respect to all those coping with a serious or life-limiting illness.

One of the most important messages to help people understand is that hospice care helps patients and families focus on living.

The Community Hospice team provides expert medical care to keep patients comfortable and able to enjoy time with loved ones.  Trained and capable care providers are able to answer questions, offer advice on what to expect, and help families with the duties of being a caregiver. The team also provides emotional and spiritual support for the entire family.

Hospice care is covered by Medicare, Medicaid, and by most insurance plans and HMOs.   Community Hospice offers Community Care which provides support and care regardless of an individual’s ability to pay.  Hospice care is provided in the home, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, long term care centers and beginning in 2012 in our own Hospice House.

Hospice care is available to people of all ages, with any illness.  Hospice professionals and trained volunteers will ask you what’s important and listen to what you say.  They make your wishes a priority.

If you or a loved one is facing a serious or life-limiting illness, the time to find out more about hospice care is right now.    Contact Community Hospice at (800) 947-7284 (www.myhospice.org)
